I joined Facebook in April of 2008 – how about you?
The vast majority of my posts that first year were text only. Real exciting updates like:

Aside from uploading my first profile photo (at left, I’d gotten married just a few months before)…
I didn’t really start posting pictures regularly on Facebook until later that year and didn’t post my first video until 2010!
Looking back through my photos, I find they were about 50% my son, 40% my pets and then whatever else. I didn’t have much strategy going on! Even though I was actively working as a REALTOR at the time I joined Facebook, I can’t find a single photo of a listing – only text posts like the one above hoping an offer would be accepted and the like.
Facebook was mostly a new and fun way to connect with friends and family near and (especially) far. A lot of us loved it but we didn’t really know what to do with it…especially when it came to real estate.
Gradually we all learned how to post our listing photos on Facebook, maybe promote our Open Houses, promote ourselves and at first, people were impressed and delighted by this. But over time, most agents got frustrated with the lack of response and results from their time on social media.
How are we doing things differently now 11 years later?
We’ve changed in that most of us are much more active with more interactive posts containing pictures, videos, tags, check-ins, emojis, links and so much more!
But it hasn’t changed much in that many of us are still struggling to really master how to use it to grow our brand and our business on this powerful (and FREE) marketing platform.
The thing with Facebook (and social media in general) is that it’s constantly changing. What that means to you is that the best practices that you may have mastered a few years ago and used to start getting some traction on Facebook don’t really work anymore.
