Most of us are.
In fact, there’s a formal definition of the term that explains:
- 90% of social media users don’t publicly interact (meaning like, comment, share, retweet, recommend, etc.)
- 9% of social media users are content contributors. This means they don’t post a lot of their own items but they share, like, comment, retweet, etc.. They are active on social media sites and you can see much of their activity.
- Only 1% of social media users are power users. Power users are both active contributors (liking, sharing, commenting, etc.) as well as posting their own items regularly.
What does this mean to you and your real estate business?
A number of things actually:
- People are on social media to be social! And that social ‘connection’ happens in the form of people liking, sharing, commenting on our posts.Think about how you feel when someone likes, comments, shares, hearts, retweets or recommends one of your posts. Science has proven that we literally get a dopamine high when that happens. One study stated it as “Social media affects the brain in the same way that a hug does”. We feel acknowledged, accepted, liked and maybe even loved!
What that means to you is that by simply and regularly engaging with the posts of your Sphere and anyone else that you can connect with, you are making people feel good. That makes people think well of you which leads to them considering working with and referring you. It also keeps you top of mind because they’re repeatedly seeing your name and smiling face when you engage with their posts. It’s that simple. - When you are part of the only 9% that DO engage with posts, you are setting yourself well apart and above everyone else! Think about it! Most people you know are likely also connected to at least a few other real estate agents on social media. But statistics tell us that the vast majority of people are not engaging with their connections. When you genuinely and regularly like, comment, share, heart, retweet, recommend – whatever you’d like – and you’re the one regularly engaging with your peep’s posts…you are going to stand out in their mind (and heart!).
- Want to REALLY set yourself apart from the crowd? Be in the 1% of power users who not only engage but regularly post your own original content. Now I know, that can be difficult, time-consuming and frustrating. But it’s so worth it! - But here’s what else it means to you…when you think that NO ONE is responding to or noticing your social media posts – you’re likely wrong. Remember, statistics tell us that 90% of social media users just aren’t in the habit of engaging. But that doesn’t mean that they’re not seeing your posts, smiling, laughing, noticing you!Yes, the goal is to post things that compel people to click that like or share button, comment or recommend or heart or retweet. But don’t get discouraged! Know that just as you likely scroll through your various social media feeds quickly and without taking the time to engage – you still notice the posts of people you care about. The same is happening with your posts.
Make a conscious decision and effort to slow your scroll enough to engage with those that interest you.
It’s been said that a ‘like’ of a post gives a feeling like a wave but a share or comment makes someone feel hugged. Go out and hug some people today and every day!
